This 1970s banana bread recipe is one of my favorite finds from a vintage Better Homes & Gardens cookbook.

Vintage cookbook recipe – 1970s banana bread from Better Homes & Gardens

Today, I’m sharing two true gems pulled straight from the 1970s Better Homes and Gardens Homemade Bread Cookbook: Banana-Nut Loaf and Sweet Banana Bread. These aren’t modern remakes or reimagined versions. These are the real recipes, just as home bakers used them fifty years ago. If you love nostalgic baking, this 1970s banana bread recipe is perfect. And best of all? Near the bottom of this page I’ve turned these snippets from my 1970,s cookbook into printable recipes you can tuck into your own recipe binder or to pass down.

Or you can right click on these images and save them to your device.

Why 1970’s Banana Bread Still Hits Different

There’s something about old recipes that modern versions can’t quite replicate. Maybe it’s the simplicity. Maybe it’s the ingredients your mom or grandma always kept on hand. Or maybe it’s the fact that these recipes were written before banana bread became an Instagram trend.
These aren’t fussy, overworked, or packed with extras. They’re the kind of recipes created for busy families, church potlucks, school bake sales, and Saturday mornings when you wanted something cozy baking in the oven.

The Banana-Nut Loaf stays true to the classic loaf pan you probably grew up with. And the Sweet Banana Bread makes two round loaves, complete with the old-fashioned rise, punch-down, and knead method that gives it that homemade texture you can’t fake.

A Cookbook Worth Saving

The 1970s Better Homes & Gardens Homemade Bread Cookbook is a collectible favorite for a reason. Just flipping the pages gives you a peek into mid-century kitchens filled with avocado appliances, orange Tupperware, and handwritten substitutions like “margarine works too” scribbled beside the ingredients.

If you’re like me and love collecting old cookbooks, this one is a must-have. It’s packed with breads, rolls, pastries, and recipes most people forgot existed.
