How to Make Sweetie Heart Cookies

This recipe makes about 25 cookies

Step 1

Lets get baking these sweetie heart cookies! First, mix the granulated sugar with two drops of red food coloring until it turns pink. Spread it on a plate and set aside to dry.

Junky Jorja TIP : You can use freeze-dried strawberries or raspberries instead of red food coloring! Just grind the freeze-dried berries into a fine powder and then mix the powder into granulated sugar.

Step 2

Cream the butter, brown sugar, and maple syrup together in a large bowl until smooth.

Step 3

Carefully separate the egg.
Add only the yolk to the large bowl.
Set the egg white aside and save it for later.

Step 4

Add the flour and stir it in well.
Gently squeeze the mixture together to form a dough.

Step 5

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator.
Chill for 30 minutes.
While it chills, preheat the oven to 350°F.

Sprinkle a clean work surface with flour.
Roll out the dough until it is about ¼ inch thick.

Use the medium heart-shaped cutter to cut out the cookies.
Carefully lift them onto the prepared cookie sheets using a spatula.

Use the small heart-shaped cutter to cut holes in the cookies.
Gather the dough scraps, roll them into a ball, roll out again, and cut more hearts.

Using a fork, stir the egg white quickly for a few seconds.
Brush a little onto each cookie, then sprinkle with pink sugar.

Bake the cookies for 10–12 minutes, until they begin to turn golden brown.
With the help of an adult, wear oven mitts and carefully remove the cookies from the oven.

Leave the cookies on the baking sheets for a few minutes.
Then carefully move them to a wire rack and let them cool completely.

Store the cookies in an airtight container and enjoy them within one week.
